It's an excellent work even if it does suffer from "play to movie" syndrome wherein one could detect regardless of prior knowledge that this was a play. The characters talk as if on a stage, the conversation doesn't have that natural flow and so on. Still, it held up pretty well watching it again. Very few plays made into movies I have ever seen succeed that well so they really need to be spotted some points from the start when judging how successful they are.
"You have ugly talents, Martha."
Richard Burton's natural drunken bitterness works perfectly for the role. Imagine being told, "You were born to play this part," and it's that part.
